Lt. Col. Edward C. Young

Lt. Col. Edward C. Young, 88, Kokomo, died at 6:35 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, 2009, at his home. He was born Oct. 6, 1920, in Oakgrove, Texas, to Joseph Richard & Hattie (Easley) Young. He married Nancy J. Meister on June 1, 1945. She survives. He was a 1938 graduate of Paris High School in Paris, Texas.
He retired from the United States Air Force. He also worked as service manager at Mason Motors, a maintenance supervisor at Cabot, and a custodian at Western High School.
He enlisted in the Army and then U.S. Air Force on Nov. 6, 1940, and on Oct. 12, 1941, was assigned to the 25th Bombardment Group, and on Jan. 29, 1943, further assigned to the 557th Bomb Squad. He served overseas in England making several flying missions and being appointed captain on June 7, 1944. On Jan. 9, 1947, he was appointed major and was assigned to the 959Ist ARES Squad in the Air Force Reserves, retiring as a Lt. Col. on Oct. 6, 1980.
He was a member of Main Street Christian Church in Russiaville where he served as an elder. He was also a member of the American Legion and a former member of the Elks.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Young, Kokomo; one son, Rick and wife Chris Young, Russiaville; one daughter, Missy and husband Jr. O’Neal, Rural Tipton County; five grandchildren, Rick and wife Karon Johnson, Todd and wife Tammy Johnson, Angie Schwarzkopf, Shauntelle and husband Darrell Dukes, and Christian O’Neal; eight great grandchildren; and two special caregivers, Karen Smith and Shelly Pearson.
He is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mildred Young and Lillian Pierce.
Services are 2 p.m. Sunday at Main Street Christian Church, 220 W. Main St. Russiaville with the Rev. Fred Whitacre and the Rev. Tom Cox officiating. Entombment will follow with full military rites by the Kokomo Military Rites Team and the United States Air Force.
Friends may call 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Stout & Son Funeral Home Russiaville Chapel, 200 E. Main St. Russiaville.
