B-26 Basic Flight Procedures
PREFLIGHT:
- Cockpit: Enter.
- Maintenance Forms (1 and 1A): Review
- Flight controls: Unlock
- Switches & Levers: Check "off" or neutral as appropriate
- Navigator compartment, bomb bays and aircraft aft section: Inspect
- Weight and balance: Check with the Load Adjuster
- Exit aircraft and perform walk-around inspection of aicraft exterior.
- Main landing gear and nose gear bays: Inspect for hydraulic leaks, strut condition, brake line and tire condition.
- Hatches: All closed.
- Gas filler caps: Secured.
- Pitot tube covers: Removed and stowed.
- Propellers: Rotate each through sixteen blades in direction of normal engine rotation.
- Reenter aircraft.
- Forward bomb bay fuel valves: Check ON.
- Main inverter cut-off switch: "ON".
- Navigator Compartment De-icer lever: Check "OFF".
- Bombardier's bomb bay door selector handle: Check in "Closed" position.
Before Starting Engines:
- Pilot seats: Adjust.
- Attach safety harnesses.
- Flight controls: Check free and clear.
- Trim tab movement: Check.
- Overhead hatches: Closed and latched.
- Parking brake: Set and locked.
- Landing gear lever: Check down.
- Pitot heat: "OFF".
- Emergency air brake bleeder valve: "OFF".
- External power source: Connected to left nacelle.
- Master switch: "OFF".
- Ignition switch: "OFF".
- Battery switches: "OFF".
- Blowers: "LOW".
- Oil cooler shutters: OPEN.
- Carburetor air control lever: "COLD".
- Mixture controls: Set to IDLE CUT-OFF.
- Propeller governor control levers: Full forward to "INCREASE RPM".
- Propeller toggle switches: "AUTO CONSTANT SPEED".
- Propeller feather switches: "NORMAL".
- Cowl flap lever: Move to OPEN then NEUTRAL.
- Inverter selector switch: "ON".
- Fuel Gauges: Check all tank levels.
- Battery switch: "ON".
- Throttles: set to approximately 3/4 inch open.
- Ground Crew: Notified.
- Propellers: Clear.
- Fire Guard: In position.
- Master switch: "ON".
Left Engine Start:
- Ignition switch (left only): "Both" magnetos.
- Booster Pump (Left): "ON".
- Left engine primer: "ON" (for a few seconds).
- Energizer switch: Hold to "LEFT" position until inertia flywheel reaches max RPM.
- Primer switch: "ON" immediately prior to meshing the starter to engine.
- Starter: Engage by holding mesh switch to the "LEFT" position while pressing primer switch until engine starts, then release both switches.
- Mixture controls: "AUTO RICH" (when engine starts firing).
- Throttle: Set to maintain 800 RPM until oil pressure rises, then increase to 1000 RPM.
Right Engine Start:
- Start using same procedures as above.
After Start:
- Boost Pumps: "OFF"
- External power source: Disconnected from left nacelle.
- Hydraulic pressure: Check 800 to 1,050 PSI.
- Oil cooler shutters: As required.
- Carburetor air control levers: "COLD" position.
- Radios: Set.
- Control Tower: Contact for taxi clearance and altimeter setting.
TAXI
- Taxi to active runway.
- Check brakes.
- Check for nose wheel shimmy.
BEFORE TAKEOFF:
- Position aircraft into the wind short of runway.
- Throttles: Set to 1,700 RPM.
- Propeller levers: Pull back and observe RPM dropoff, then set back to 1,700 RPM.
- Propeller toggle switches: Check proper function in each setting ("DECREASE RPM", "FIXED PITCH", "INCREASE RPM", then "CONSTANT SPEED RPM").
- Throttles: Set to 2,100 RPM.
- Propeller toggle switches: Set to "FIXED PITCH".
- Left Magneto switch: Move to "LEFT" then to "BOTH", then "RIGHT" then "BOTH. RPM drop should be no more than 75.
- Propeller toggle switches: Set to "CONSTANT SPEED RPM".
- Right Magneto switch: Move to "LEFT" then to "BOTH", then "RIGHT" then "BOTH. RPM drop should be no more than 75.
- Throttles: Reduce to 1,000 RPM.
- Left throttle: Advance to 2,700 RPM. Check gauges in the green, then reduce back to 1,000 RPM.
- Right throttle: Advance to 2,700 RPM. Check gauges in the green, then reduce back to 1,000 RPM.
- Feathering switches: Check proper operation.
- Flaps: Extend to "1/4" position.
- Booster pumps: "ON".
- Landing gear lever safety lock: Remove.
- Elevator trim: Set to 5 degrees nose up.
- Control Tower: Contact for takeoff clearance.
TAKEOFF:
- Position aircraft on the runway.
- Brakes: Release.
- Throttles: Set to 52 inches manifold pressure and 2,700 RPM.
- Maintain directional control with coordinated brakes then rudder control.
- Rotate slightly at 80 MPH and hold attitude until liftoff.
- Landing gear: Raise when safe to obtain 140 MPH as soon as possible.
- Flaps: Retract at 500 feet and 170 MPH.
- Cowl flaps: Set as required to maintain desired cylinder head temperature.
- Climb to desired altitude at 170 MPH using 37 inches manifold pressure and 2300 RPM.
CRUISE
- Fuel Boost pumps: "Off" (upon reaching cruising altitude).
- Throttles: Set to 30 inches manifold pressure and 2,000 RPM.
- Mixture controls: Set to "AUTO-LEAN" (above 5000 feet).
- Crew checks: Complete.
- Gun checks: Completed when appropriate.
LANDING:
- Center of gravity: Check with Load Adjuster as appropriate.
- Crew: Notifed to prepare for landing.
- Control Tower: Contact to advise inbound and receive airfield information.
- Altimeter: Set to station pressure.
- Blowers: "LOW" and safety cover in place.
- Oil cooler shutters: Adjust to maintain proper oil temperature.
- Carburetor air control levers: "COLD".
- Mixture controls: Set to "AUTO RICH" (below 5000 feet).
- Propeller toggle switches: "AUTO CONSTANT SPEED".
- Propeller levers: Set to 2,250 RPM
- Fuel boost pumps: "ON"
- Airspeed: 165 MPH on downwind leg.
- Landing gear handle: Lower. Check gear down and locked with green lights.
- Turn final approach at 165 MPH.
- Flaps: Extend while reducing speed to 150 MPH.
- Establish proper rate of descent to runway.
- Flare smoothly, reduce power while pulling nose up gradually to touchdown on main wheels.
- Lower nosewheel to runway as speed bleeds off.
AFTER LANDING:
- Flaps: Retract.
- Cowl flaps: "OPEN".
- Landing gear safety lock: Attach.
- Fuel boost pumps: "OFF".
- Propeller levers: Full forward.
- Taxi to parking.
